High in the hills of Rwanda’s Western Province, near the shores of Lake Kivu, the Rugarura washing station sits in a landscape defined by steep slopes, cool nights, and small family farms scattered across the ridgelines. Coffee here is grown at high elevation in rich volcanic soils, where slow cherry maturation allows sugars to develop gradually, building the foundation for the clarity and sweetness Rwanda has become known for. Fidelis Nzeyimana, founder of the Rugarura station, established the site with the goal of creating a reliable market for local producers while focusing on careful processing and consistent quality. Today, hundreds of nearby producers deliver ripe cherry to the station each harvest, often picked from small plots planted with traditional Bourbon varieties.

This lot was produced using the natural, or dry, process, a method still less common in Rwanda but one that has gained attention for the depth and fruit character it can reveal when handled with precision. After careful sorting, whole cherries are dried slowly on raised beds under close supervision, with constant turning to ensure even drying in the region’s humid mountain climate. The result is a coffee that carries the hallmark structure of Rwanda’s high-grown Bourbon while showing a broader, more fruit-driven profile. Natural processed lots from Rugarura tend to highlight dense and jammy berry-toned sweetness, layered acidity, and a round, syrupy texture, while still maintaining the balance and pristine cleanliness that define the best coffees from this region.
